EURO 2020

UEFA EURO 2020

Double standards

Headline from the Telegraph tonight

Italy fans to be allowed into Euro 2020 final at Wembley without self-isolating

Ministers and Uefa agree on exemption for supporters, despite England fans being barred from entering Rome for the quarter final

So we were not allowed to go to Rome thanks to their anti-UK quarantining rules, but apparently they can come to Wembley. No doubt Scipio's blasted helmet gives you immunity from Covid.Maybe it should be made available on the NHS.

This kind of hypocrisy and double standards makes my blood boil. I hope it does yours too

Even more reason to beat them on Sunday and leave the fans crying into their mushroom risotto.

How about an exemption for all the expats who went to Rome? Thought not. All animals are equal but some are more equal than others.

Really annoying I know, but just shows that we are a much nicer nation than them, have you seen the Italian press regarding favouritism for England from refs and uefa “childish “

You mean like the favouritism that allowed Maradonna's goal and disallowed Lampard's?

I suppose they don't like us playing them at their game. Donnaruma going down for 2 minutes against Belgium for example

As part of the agreement for Wembley to host the final, we had to agree to have minimum 60k capacity and allow 1000 away fans in for minimum 12 hours.

Or another way of looking at this is imagine that you're the Italian that travels watching them everywhere and denied attending a final because of these rules. Loads of them missed the semi already which trumps us missing the QF.

Doesn't make my blood boil in the slightest, try and look at from another viewpoint is all.

If I was a top capper who hadn't missed a game for ages and was denied going to Rome by Italian government regulations I would be justifiably upset at the UK government making exemptions for Italian football fans to visit the UK.

    In reply to Martyn Lote:

I'm a top capper and I would have gone to Rome if it had been permitted. But I am also mindful that London was perilously close to losing the semi-finals and final to Budapest because of the UK's coronavirus quarantine requirement. If the price for keeping these matches at Wembley was to sacrifice a trip to Rome and allow 1000 Italian fans into the country for 12 hours then it is a price worth paying.

    In reply to Martyn Lote:

Covids thrown a spanner in the works for everyone. As mentioned the Italian top capper already missed the SF.

If you're so concerned about top cappers then presumably you agree that Italian top cappers shouldn't have to miss games either. The conclusion there would be that you feel that Budapest would have been the fairest location for both sets of fans?

I doubt you feel that way but rather have some cynical view England are more deserving and can't seperate politics from the event itself.

I’m with you, Alan, on this one. I think we were royally stitched up. If I ever have the pleasure of meeting you, I’ll tell you the story of someone who travelled from here, on a UK passport, virtually no questions on arrival, etc, etc, etc, you know what’s coming, saw the game came back, went Wednesday, going Sunday. Media and authorities hyped it all up and those of us like you me, and others, missed out when there’s every good reason to suggest we shouldn’t have done. And then for our government to bend the rules to allow a thousand of their lot in is hypocrisy of the highest standard.
