UEFA Nations League: UEFA Statement

Posted by Team England at 14:31 on Tuesday 30 January 2018

UEFA has today issued the following statement regarding England's UEFA Nations League fixture against Croatia on Friday 12 October 2018

UEFA can confirm that the UEFA Nations League group stage match between Croatia and England scheduled for 12 October 2018 will be played behind closed doors. This relates back to a decision taken by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on 23 July 2015 which ordered the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) to play its next two home matches in UEFA competition without supporters in the stadium.

Gareth Southgate's team kick-off their UEFA Nations League campaign with a home match against Spain on Saturday 8 September with the first away match of the campaign against Croatia the following month.

The decision to play the match behind closed doors has been made by UEFA who advised us today. Further information will be provided on their website here as it is confirmed.

i'm sure that our FA didn't know about this beforehand.

This looks like a massive communication failure between the UEFA Disciplinary Dept and those involved in the Nations League Draw. They managed to sort out, and publish beforehand, the rules on separating Russia and Ukraine, etc but missed this.

Whilst I fully support the reasons for the "closed doors"punishment (it should have been stronger imho) I expect our FA to make an extremely strong case to allow fans who have booked travel or accommodation before the announcement to be allowed to attend - this will probably be less than 500.

Failure to achieve this leaves the real danger of England fans trying to get into the game anyway which would very likely lead to confrontations with police and Croatian fans.

I'm sure that our FA are as p155ed off as we are but can't say that now while talking with uefa about a solution.

Instead of moaning at our FA we can help strengthen their, our, hand by adding to the thread "who's booked" to show how many of us are already booked to go.

As I had said on earlier post.  The shambles appears the Croatian FA nor the uefa ethics team notified the English fa.  The sanctions against Croatia was posted 23rd July 2015.  So really uefa should have said when the fixtures were released or at least Croatia fa should have said.

My personal situation is that I had booked hotels but had held out on flights due to needing confirmation from work and waiting for where Spain game was being played

I get the impression that the Croatian FA were also unaware so the blame is surely with UEFA. I reckon the Croatian FA thought they had already served this ban.

UEFA are ridiculous. Surely there are better ways of punishing a country than punishing their opponents as well. For example they could be made to play at a neutral venue where only members of the opponent's supporters club are sold tickets, or away fans only should be let in.  UEFA have just shown contempt for the fans. Par for the course I suppose. Maybe we should just boycott this stupid competition.
