UEFA Nations League: England's group confirmed

Posted by Team England at 13:50 on Wednesday 24 January 2018

England will take on Euro rivals Spain and Croatia in the UEFA Nations Cup later this year.

The draw for the new competition, which takes place in September, October and November 2018, was made in Switzerland today.

The Three Lions were drawn out in group four of League A to set up four games with Spain and Croatia, both home and away, later this year.

The 54 pre-seeded European nations separated into four different leagues based on their co-efficient ranking.Teams were then drawn out into their smaller groups in each league, with the results and final positions in those groups dictating who will be promoted or relegated.

In England’s league, the teams who top their group will progress to the Nations Cup finals in June 2019 while the nations who finish bottom will be relegated to League B for the next series of the competition in 2020.

I'm not sure I like having our 2 away fixtures over the same weekend. However, it is what it is.

How quickly can we be told the venue cities. We really need to know both venues before we can make transport and accommodation arrangements and beat the price hikes, as the 2 trips will need to be coordinated. We can take a punt on Croatia being in Zagreb - 95% certain - but the Spain fixture could be anywhere.

FA: could you press for an early decision on venues, please.

Spain hasn't played an international fixture in Madrid since March 2014 nor in Barcelona since February 2004. We really have no basis for guessing where our Nations League match might be played.

@matthew: If I remember correctly, the FA has no plan to move England games outside of Wembley until the debt is fully repaid. They did announce that they look into taking the team around the country for the season 2018/2019 but I doubt it. Playing Croatia and Spain should attract big crowds so would make little sense for the FA to play elsewhere.

Regarding Croatia, as posted on the forum, can't see it being played outside of Zagreb unless the infamious BBB ultras group make a nuisance of themselves and the game has to be relocated. The last few games being played in Split were all friendlies, except for two qualifiers (one being a game being played behind closed doors).

If you wait until the venues are confirmed you won't beat the price hikes as that is when they hike!!

    Have a gamble!!
