Southgate names his squad for Germany and Brazil friendlies

Posted by Team England at 14:00 on Thursday 02 November 2017

England manager Gareth Southgate has named his squad to play Germany and Brazil at Wembley this month.

A 25-man group has been selected for the games, which see the Three Lions continue their preparations for next summer’s World Cup.

And Southgate has handed first senior call-ups to three players, with Swansea City striker Tammy Abraham, Liverpool defender Joe Gomez and Crystal Palace midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek all named in the squad after previously featuring for the U21s.

There’s also a return to the squad for Manchester United’s Ashley Young, whose last cap came over four years ago as a substitute in a 0-0 draw with Ukraine during the qualifying campaign for the 2014 World Cup.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Danny Rose is also back in the squad after an injury had kept him out of the last few games.

“We’re in a position now where we’ve qualified for the World Cup and we always wanted to look at the team and how we want it to evolve,” revealed Southgate, in relation to the younger players he’s called up.

“This is an opportunity to look at new players and a different way of playing and I think the beauty of my position is that I know the young players in the system.

“These lads are players who, right through the age groups, have been recognised as being our best players and they’re all playing well with their clubs and having a good impact.

“This is a great opportunity to see if they can fit into the senior team and they’ve got the chance to stay there if they do well.”

The squad will report to St. George’s Park on Monday to begin their preparations for the games, with the current World Cup holders first up on Friday 10 November.

Brazil are then the visitors to Wembley four days later on Tuesday 14 November for England's final game of the calendar year.

Probably best next time if Gareth names his squad one hour before kick off the rate this is going. Any more injuries and we might have to check out the National league for any fit players.

Overall a stupid time for friendlies right in the middle of Champs league and tough Prem fixtures.

Good luck to the players who can step up to the plate I guess.
