Cahill: We should have beat Germany

Posted by Team England at 10:41 on Wednesday 01 March 2017

We hope you are looking forward to the match on Sunday!

Please arrive to Wembley in good time, as due to the events at Westminster Bridge this week there will be heightened security at the stadium, including 100% bag searches and more.

Ahead of the match, Gary Cahill has said England must be more clinical in front of goal.

Cahill, who captained England during the Germany match in Dortmund, said: “We had the better chances, it’s as simple as that. I think we’ll look back and reflect that if we take our chances we win that game.

“It’s a learning curve for us, if we’re a little bit more clinical in front of goal. We played well today, especially [in] the first half. We controlled the game really well. We take our chances and we win.

“We had to work hard and produce a performance with a bit of quality and I felt we did that for large periods of the game.”

Cahill lined up in a back three, to the left of Chris Smalling and Keane. It was the first time an England team had started with a back three in a decade and the Chelsea defender said his team-mates need time to adapt to a new system.

He added: “We have to be patient. We’ve gone into that formation for the first time.

“The lads played on Saturday and Sunday, we had a cool down [on Monday], so we’ve had one day where everyone’s been out on the training pitch.

“It’s difficult to put [the team] in a new formation and everyone grasp it straight away.

“That being said, there are a lot of positives to take.”

England are in action again on Sunday when they entertain Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley.
