Southgate selects 25-man group for Scotland and Spain

Posted by Team England at 20:01 on Friday 11 November 2016

The England squad for this month's games against Scotland and Spain has been named.

Interim manager Gareth Southgate has selected 25 players, with Jack Wilshere recalled having missed out on the last two squads.

There is also a return for Harry Kane, who scored in Tottenham Hotspur's draw at Arsenal on Sunday afternoon having previously been out of action since mid-September.

Adam Lallana, Raheem Sterling and Nathaniel Clyne also return after being ruled out of October's games against Malta and Slovenia due to injury.

Uncapped Burnley defender Michael Keane retains his place in the squad, having been drafted in half-way through the previous meet-up.

"Over the last few weeks we've been looking at as many games as possible and keeping track of all of the players," said Southgate.

"There were some players that weren't available to us last time with injury who are in good form that make the frame – the likes of Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana and Raheem Sterling. It's good to be able to welcome them back.

"Similarly Harry Kane. We had some good discussions with a lot of the clubs over the past few weeks, and Tottenham have been very helpful in terms of Harry's availability. I'm grateful to Mauricio [Pochettino] for that.

"Of course, Jack Wilshere is a player that we feel has a lot of class and is now starting to get more 90-minutes under his belt. It's good to bring him back into the squad."

The Three Lions will report to St. George's Park on Monday lunchtime, before which Southgate will speak to the media – with the press conference broadcast live on England's official Twitter and Facebook accounts.

England face Scotland in a 2018 World Cup qualifier on Friday 11 November, before taking on Spain in their final game of 2016 on Tuesday 15 November.

The Scotland game is sold out, but tickets remain available for the latter fixture at TheFA.com/Tickets priced from only £20 for adults and £10 for children.

So glad to see Jack Wilshere in there. Wins games by himself, non stop goal machine! Why has he never had a chance before?

Don't really see why anyone would criticise this squad selection. With what is available, no manager could really put forward anything that would be radically different to this squad. Those deluded enough to suggest that a top foreign name could somehow change things should think again. Who, exactly, would you remove from this squad and who would you replace them with? We need to move to a situation where more than 32% of those playing in the Premier League are English if we really want to change this. Until then, this is as good as we have folks and therefore we need to get behind the manager and the players.
