Roy Hodgson: 'We're frustrated but England's time will come'

Posted by Team England at 09:27 on Tuesday 21 June 2016

Roy Hodgson insists his England side fear nobody at Euro 2016 – despite finishing second to Wales in Group B following the 0-0 draw with Slovakia.

The stalemate means England have drawn two and won one of their matches in the competition, ending with five points while Slovakia are third on four.

But although Wales thumped Russia 3-0 to top the group with six points, Hodgson is adamant the style of football his side is playing will soon change their fortunes.

The England manager said: “We’re frustrated, but it’s like that when you dominate three games and only manage to win one of them.

“The fans were magnificent again today so it’s disappointing not to be able to give them a win but I don’t think we could’ve done any more than we did.

“We dominated the game from start to finish and had so many attempts and chances and one day we’re going to put those chances away.

“As far as I’m concerned I can’t fault the effort and work the lads put in. It’s a little bit embarrassing that we’ve played three games and in each of the three games it’s been attack versus defence."

The Three Lions controlled 60 per cent of the possession and had 29 shots on goal against Slovakia but could not break the deadlock at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.

Hodgson added: "The way we’re playing at the moment – to be quite honest – I’m not frightened of anybody.

“I thought I’d never see an England team in a tournament be able to dominate three games as much as we’ve done so that gives me some sort of satisfaction.

“And I’m pretty sure that sooner or later we’re going to make somebody pay because if we keep dominating and creating chances like we’re doing we’re going to score goals one day.”

England will play the runners-up of Group F in Nice on Monday – meaning they will face one of Portugal, Hungary, Iceland or Austria in the last 16.

Hodgson added: “Finishing second in the group is a disappointment as we’d have liked to have won it but we’re still in the last 16.

"And who’s to say that the team we play by finishing second will be that much stronger than the team who finish third – you don’t know that."

Sure England dictated the game, and had some clear chance to score, but failed. Slovakia on the other hand had not a single shot  at England's goal. Now; what that tells us about England - we are just not good enough. Except for Clyn; no one played well too be reckoned with. Sorry but that is the truth.

Failed to breakdown a limited but organised rear guard action from Slovakia. Sloppy distribution at times and poor delivery of final ball and when we did get in on goal finishing not clinical for all the possession and shots think keeper only had to make 3 or 4 saves in whole game. Henderson, Wiltshire & Sturridge didn't make difference we would have hoped for and once again 4-3-3 formation did not quite click hopefully it will be more effective against a team who actually wants to score a goal rather than defend for 90 minutes but we should really be capable of breaking this sort of side down for all their defensive hard work they had  a distinct lack of pace at back which we did not exploit well enough. For me left side of midfield and attack has been a sore in our side and no manager for a very long time has managed to solve it and it is clearly beyond Roy's capabilities.

Don't worry, as Roy says I am confident than we are going to convert these chances and score goals... when do we play Malta in world cup qualifying?

Let's just be thankful that we are through to the knock out stages. Now the competition really starts. As Mr Hodgson has said , his team do not need to fear anyone. If the teams in the last 16 knockout stage want to progress then they have to come out play football and not only try, but have to want to win. I do not agree with every team selection that has been made so far; but does everybody ? I would question why certain personnel were included against Slovakia when the team that played against Wales had such success. I have watched all the England games so far ; for me the successes have been the following , Dier, Walker, Rooney,Lallana,Smalling,Hart,Vardy,Cahill and Sturridge. Obviously others will see things differently, but ultimately lets all just get behind the team and give them the support that they deserve. By the way , I watched England win the World Cup in 1966, I was 11 years old; one of the greatest and proudest days of my life. A big competition win for England is well overdue. So anybody who is proud to be English just get behind the team and give them the support that they deserve.
