England's Jack Wilshere: 'We're in a good place' ahead of Wales

Jack Wilshere believes England set themselves a good standard of performance in their Euro 2016 opener on Saturday.

The Three Lions were held to a 1-1 draw with Russia in Marseille, with a stoppage time goal from Vasili Berezutski cancelling out Eric Dier’s free-kick.

But despite the initial disappointment of missing out on three points, Arsenal midfielder Wilshere says the squad were pleased with their team display throughout the game.

"We’re in a good place, you know," revealed Wilshere.

"Naturally I think if you dominate a game like that and don’t win it, you’re going to be disappointed.

"But after sleeping on it and looking back on the performance we’re happy, we played well, we moved the ball around and we kept the ball.

"In the past England teams have been accused of not being technically good enough, not keeping the ball, and we showed that we are good enough and we can keep the ball."

Roy Hodgson’s squad are now back at their Euro base in Chantilly, where attentions have switched to Thursday’s game with Wales.



Following Wales’ 2-1 win over Slovakia on Saturday, it means Chris Coleman’s side go into the second round of fixtures on top of Group B.

But Wilshere believes that England can usurp them in Lens if they can maintain the same level of performance.

"I don’t think it’s about bouncing back, we just need to maintain our standards that we’re setting," he added.

"Against Russia, of course, we need to look at the goal and analyse what went wrong there, but apart from that the performance was brilliant.

"The results obviously put Wales in a good position, but we’ve got to play Wales, so the group’s nice and we know what we’ve got to do.
