In Focus: Marseille’s Stade Velodrome

Posted by Team England at 15:19 on Wednesday 23 March 2016

Marseille’s 67,394-capacity stadium, Stade Velodrome, will be the first venue of Euro 2016 where England take on Russia in their tournament opener.

The stadium opened on the 13 June 1937 with a friendly match between Marseille and Italian side Torino, and during the 1938 World Cup the stadium hosted one first round match and the semi-final between Italy and Brazil (2-1).

Opened in 1937 the Stade Vélodrome has been upgraded on several occasions. The stadium has now been increased in size and a roof added.

During Euro 2016, Stade Velodrome will host four first round group matches including England's first match against Russia, as well as one for the French national team, a quarter-final, and one of the two semi-finals.
