Wayne Rooney and Jack Butland win 2015 England POTY awards

Posted by Team England at 11:37 on Tuesday 05 January 2016

Wayne Rooney has been named as the Vauxhall England Player of the Year for 2015, retaining the title for the second successive year.

The voting has been open over the last few weeks via the England Supporters Club before the deadline passed at midnight on Sunday.

And captain Rooney can add another accolade to his account for last year after also becoming the Three Lions’ all-time top goalscorer, with 37 per cent of the votes to claim the England POTY for a fourth time.

The Manchester United striker scored five goals in his eight England appearances during 2015, including his record-breaking penalty against Switzerland which took his overall international tally to 50 to surpass Sir Bobby Charlton’s record.

England fans could also vote for their Under-21s Player of the Year and Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland took that honour with 54 per cent of the votes.

Butland’s award follows on from his performances for Gareth Southgate’s side in captaining them to the Euro Championship Finals in Czech Republic last June, before stepping into Roy Hodgson’s senior squad towards the end of the year.

His displays for Stoke in the Premier League this season have since seen him become a firm rival to Joe Hart as the Three Lions approach Euro 2016 next summer.

The duo will be presented with their awards ahead of March's fixtures between Germany in Berlin and the Netherlands at Wembley Stadium connected by EE.
