England end Far East adventure with win over Australia

Posted by Team England at 10:05 on Wednesday 28 October 2015

Isobel Christiansen scored the only goal of the game as England ended their Far East adventure with a deserved 1-0 win over World Cup quarter finalists Australia in Yongchuang.

The Manchester City midfielder, who made a goalscoring start to her international career against Estonia last month, was played in by club mate Lucy Bronze and beat Aussie goalkeeper Lydia Williams from an acute angle to seal the victory.

And the Lionesses might have won the game by a greater margin as Eniola Aluko hit the bar in the first half and Jill Scott, who was celebrating her 100th cap, hit two efforts over the top after the break.

After earning her 100th cap in England’s 1-0 win over Australia, Jill Scott said it was one of the best days of her life. The 28-year-old led the Lionesses out for their final match of the Dewellbon Cup, with Isobel Christiansen’s second-half strike sealing the victory.

Scott said: "It’s a very special day. Probably one of the best days of my life.

"I’d like to thank the team and the staff for making it such a special day for me and my family and friends.

"It’s definitely a day to remember and treasure."

The Manchester City midfielder made her debut against Holland in August 2006 and has gone on to play at two European Championships and three World Cups, helping England to win silver at Euro 2009 and bronze at Canada 2015.

And she is only the ninth Women’s player to reach triple figures.

The former Sunderland and Everton star added: "I knew it was approaching after the World Cup and I’m just absolutely delighted to get 100 caps and join the fantastic names that have already reached [the landmark]; Casey Stoney, Rachel Yankey and Fara Williams are just a few.

"I can’t believe I’m in the ‘100 Club’."

She said: "We needed this win today. We didn’t want to leave China having not won a game.

"We competed very well and there were a lot of positives we can take from the game. I thought Demi Stokes was fantastic and as a team I think we stuck to the plan and it was a great finish by Izzy to win it."

England’s next assignment is an away friendly against European champions Germany on 26 November, three days before they entertain Bosnia & Herzegovina at Bristol City FC.

Tickets for the Bosnia game are on sale now priced £5 for adults and £2.50 for children. A family ticket (two adults and two children) is available at £10 and group booking discounts apply.

Tickets can be purchased via TheFA.com/Tickets or by calling 01179 630 600.
