EURO 2020

UEFA EURO 2020

Wembley security yesterday

Something I raised earlier in the tournament was the pathetic security arrangements. After the shambles of last night, quite frankly... we do not deserve to host a home tournament in this country  until the security at Wembley is giving a complete overhaul.

When we went to Russia, you had private security,  Fifa volunteers, the police and the military all carrying out proper ticket/person checks on everyone at certain checkpoints. It all went very quickly and without fuss.

The scenes yesterday at Wembley were truly ridiculous, from how easy it was for people to get into the stadium for free to random fights breaking out between stewards and fans. What's the point in collecting the caps now when you can just waltz in un-challenged? It was good to see some honest England fans challenging these free loaders but it shouldn't be their job.

The current security arrangements are not fit for purpose. Something needs to happen.

Of course you can close off Wembley way.

The businesses - there will still be 60k (90k normally) there, I’m sure they’ll still have one of their busiest days trade of the year.
Residents - do a letter drop informing them of the arrangements on the day. If they show a proof of address they can come and go as they please.
Non football visitors - there are loads of restaurants, cinemas and shopping centres in London, why the hell would you go to the only one next to a football stadium where 60k will visit? Again put it on the news, social media etc. to inform as many people as possible of the arrangements on the day.
Pubs - find somewhere else to drink, there is no shortage of London pubs. There is 60k at the match, they’ll still be turning people away.
Workers - issue them with IDs or passes to allowed them in and out.
Friends visiting Wembley residents - meet somewhere other than the only place hoisting an international football final.

Wembley hadn’t hosted a tournament this big in 25 years! I’m sure a few days of restrictions every 25 years isn’t too much to ask!

Probably been mentioned already in this thread but what was the game doing starting at 8pm, its a Sunday, 4 or 5 would of been fine. I know UEFA didn't know we would make the final but there was a big chance playing at home all tournament more or less. The FA and UEFA always come across as incompetent (FIFA more competent but corrupt!).

UEFA always choose 8pm as its the prime slot for television, regardless of which teams are playing. Sad for the actual attending fans but always come second to tv...

Pretty clear, that Wembley - and all entrances - should have been closed until 5pm - stadium entrance time. Except to resident permit holders only.

No alcohol to be allowed on Wembley way once opened and tickets checked immediately. No ticket, you're immediately escorted away. As people have said, plenty of places & parks to drink in London, you don't need to congregate there. If people can't get in then there's no rushing of gates etc.
The check of the Vax/LVT, could happen somewhere else, down the way once the initial ticket check had been made.

Secondary entrances blocked, and closed off by a marshalled police line. A lot of improvements needed if/when another big event comes along.

Did you not see the Russian surge INSIDE the stadium as soon as the final whistle went, then?

France 2016 was touted as being “the most secure tournament ever” yet Russians brought in flares. The security pat downs going into the stadium were laughable at best. So yes, I very much can compare the two, and the point still stands: no one argues France should be excluded based on one match day, so why should England suffer? (Note: personally I want 2030 to be in South America as it’s 100 years on from the first World Cup in Uruguay)

It shouldn't be though. I get why UEFA do it but 8pm in the UK is 11pm in Moscow and, I'm guessing here, 3am in Vladivostok. It isn't that I give a great deal of thought to a Russian football supporter from Asia but if they want to watch the final of the second most important competition that their country enters then the game could finish after 5am. It is a bit daft.

Great point. The surge itself was instigated by a loud air bomb, clearly organised beforehand.

Ironically, for the WC semi, the security around the Luzhniki was second to none. The perimeter fence was massive and miles from the stadium, coupled with proper checks.

Anyone go to the Olympics in 2012? To get to the inner stadiums you first went through an Army staffed bag check and body check. Could something similar have been done with the covid check on Wembley way or other entrance areas? Those Army men & women certainly looked the part back then. i'm sure they could have done a far more professional job than the one provided. Just an idea for the future.

Was only thinking about this yesterday, whilst I didn't attend any of the Olympics, I did go to the Opening ceremony concert at Hyde Park and I remember that being a big procedure to get through and into.
