EURO 2020

UEFA EURO 2020

Disgusting treatment of ESTC members

Hi

I would like to place on record my absolute disgust of the ticketing process. For the original tournament all that time ago my friend and I were lucky enough to secure tickets to every England game at Euro 2020 including the knock out games via the follow your team system.

When the details of the tournament and attendance restrictions were finally confirmed and the games reballoted we did not get a single ticket to a single game.

Then yesterday, miracle, get an email saying I have been successful in the ballot of extra Czech Republic tickets. So I am in place ready to go at 10.55am this morning. The access code arrives at 10:57am and is not recognised by uefa until 11am, by which time the website is going so slow that it times me out before I can actually achieve anything. It is now 12:44pm and I have finally given up after constant attempts to purchase tickets. I would rather have not got a successful ballot email and felt so happy, just to have those hopes dashed.

In the build up to England v Scotland I felt truly devastated to have known that I was meant to be there and couldn't be.

I have been a ESTC member for 11 years and this is how I am treated. I am sure I am not alone and everyone else has similar stories.

Regards

Joe

    In reply to Matthew Isle:

    Matt,

Sorry, but this doesn't stack up - you are trying to use bad statistics against me here!

The over 40% you refer to was for Cat1 tickets where we only had 139 tickets allocated in the first place, so every unsold ticket represents 1.4%. So it only takes a few unsold tickets (in this case 43 in first ballot) for percentage to increase more rapidly - it's like those shampoo adverts that say 98% of women agree, only for the small print to say out of only 35 interviewed!! At 185 euros a ticket is it no wonder these didn't sell quite as well as the rest????

Now compare that to the full original allocation of 2855 tickets where only 320 remained after first sale, which is an 89% take up rate, and then add in the second sale where only 75 remained, making it a 97.4% take up rate after two ballots.

So 97.4% of members offered a ticket to the Czech Republic game through the first two ballots took up that ticket offer - I therefore stand fully behind my comment that 'realistically only a very small handful didn't sell'

To then say that there was 'apathy' by members in these two ballots is not on..... 2.6% of eligible members not taking up there offer of a ticket is not apathy.... especially in a pandemic where people have lost jobs and can no longer afford to go especially if they have to justify the expense of moving from a Cat 3 to a Cat1 priced ticket, overseas members who are restricted from attending by quarantine restrictions, or members that are suffering from illness, etc etc.

As for increasing the caps level for the code from 13 to 20 (or in my opinion somewhere in mid-20s) - what different and larger subset of fans would be disappointed? The fans on 13 to 20 caps already knew they hadn't got enough caps and needed to rely on being extremely lucky in the 10% bit of the 70/20/10 ballot process, so what changes????

Also not impressed by your post being 'liked' by Team England, especially given the apathy comment......

I'm not after an argument, was lucky enough to go to first two group games, and as a 30+ capper I know and accept I don't have a divine right to a ticket for every match in this tournament under the restrictions placed on us, but what I would expect is a fair and just system, which up until this point had worked really well, and have been full of praise for how ESTC have handled things. Today was unfair, not only because of the huge oversubscribed number of people, but because it wasn't even first come first served - most people that got there first were dumped out the queue as they were entering credit card details on tickets they thought they had secured because UEFA systems couldn't cope (which shouldn't have been a surprise...).

The majority of committed members (myself included) have been full of praise for Team England for the way they've handled the difficult circumstances around ticketing up until now, and the extra efforts put in to securing additional tickets is truly appreciated.

I just hope Team England take some time to reflect on the feedback on forums and social media today, and have the decency to stand up and put out a communication that says, you know what guys we got it wrong today and we're sorry..... saying sorry is OK...

    In reply to Karl Daines:

I understand you're not looking to argue. I'm definitely not either so will make this my last entry on here whilst we watch, hopefully, an Italian masterclass.

We clearly have very different interpretations of the 'very small handful' term you used.

This term means three or four tickets left over to me. Certainly less than ten.

Certainly not the scores who didn't take up the option to purchase for their own valid reasons in previous sales.

The scores who didn't take up the option previously were the more committed members. With, at least, twice (I think) the amount of caps that the caps level was subsequently reduced to to allow entry into today's sale.

It's difficult to extrapolate but I'd have thought (maybe wrongly) that if over 40% of some cats (and those are the figures) were unsold for the more committed members then this figure would have been even greater for the less committed members involved in today's sale?

Think the stats back this up from the unsold sales from sale one to sale two. I.e. increasing unsold as a % in subsequent sales.

Maybe you're right - the answer is to put the entry into any third sale fastest finger sales upto a very, very high caps level so fewer members get a chance.

But then due to timelines that maybe that would result in unsold tickets though. And that would be unthinkable??

I haven't checked your caps but that (the increase in caps not the unsold tickets) may suit you? Possibly won't suit others on 13 or 14 caps who were lucky today though and would be excluded in future. And certainly wouldn't be palatable to most if it meant tickets were left unsold due to being so close to the game.

They were always going to upset members due to the situation so maybe the answer is for the ESTC team not to fight for the relatively (in terms of %) large extra tickets so they don't have this situation at all in future. Especially if people honestly don't think they're trying to do their best for us, in a unique situation, and are wanting apologies rather than being thankful of an opportunity to buy tickets that weren't even available to us even a couple of days ago.

Anyway good luck (genuinely meant) in any future sales.

Joe, I was in the same position had full set of team England tickets only to have the lot pulled. I got my code as you did at 10:57 & must have been one of the lucky one as by 11:05 had my ticket.
I don’t blame Englandfans but I do put the blame firmly at the door of UEFA everything they do is a mess but they have no one to answer to that is the problem. God help us as the last 16 tickets come up & hopefully further rounds.
Good luck to all of us getting tickets.

Like you Joe I had every ticket right up to the final never asked for the refund in the ballot I got the Scotland game cat 3 but couple days before the Croatian game I got email saying I could purchase Cat 1 with no hesitation I got my code and straight away got my ticket .For the Czech game same again got my code but I’m still in the waiting room,After getting so close with checkout they throw me out and I’m still in the waiting room...at least I can laugh about it now and know what to expect for the next ballot...
I feel a little better knowing others shared the same pain....

    In reply to Matthew Isle:

    Hi Matt

I`ve been reading your posts on here for quite some time and would say that you do a brilliant job helping some fans with their queries and I`m sure that it`s much appreciated.

However I do think in this instance that you are too quick to come down on the side of the ESTC Team.
    Your last paragraph.......

"They were always going to upset members due to the situation so maybe the answer is for the ESTC team not to fight for the relatively (in terms of %) large extra tickets so they don't have this situation at all in future. Especially if people honestly don't think they're trying to do their best for us, in a unique situation, and are wanting apologies rather than being thankful of an opportunity to buy tickets that weren't even available to us even a couple of days ago."

As regards the ballot for Scotland tickets where all the tickets were sold before the appointed sale time of 1pm has there been any explanation for this farce from ESTC? I have checked this website several times without finding any statement from them regarding this.

Whether the fault for this was from the ESTC by issuing access codes too early or whether it was the fault of UEFA for allowing access codes to be used prior to 1pm, then surely at the very least ESTC could make some sort of comment or statement on this website regarding this.
To my knowledge no official explanation has been given on here, it`s as though it didn`t happen.

People do think that they are trying their best to get more tickets for each game but when something like that farcical Scotland ballot occurs then they could at least acknowledge that something went wrong.

As other members have stated previously, however good a job this ESTC team are doing, they should take on board constructive comments from this forum. Surely there must be a better way of selling extra allocations than by dangling tickets in front of eager fans and then snatching those tickets away from them without, in some cases, even allowing them the opportunity to take part in the sale?

Sorry to hear that Joe. I’m in exactly the same boat and got similarly screwed by the slow speed of UEFA’s website.

I also had all the group games in the original ballot and subsequently lost them in the post-COVID ballot. I wonder if there was something ESTC could have done to spread out the tickets for the group games so that members who had originally applied for ALL group games got a ticket for at least one of them?

    Nick
