R16 and QF hotels and flights - stick or twist?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has fights and hotels booked for Copenhagen, Rome, St Petersburg etc on the basis that I had been allocated tickets  - almost all of them that I could cancel a few days ahead when I knew where England would finish in the group. Having the ballot for the round of 16 and QFs after the group stage means we won't know whether we have a ticket until about 48 hours before the match - too late to cancel flights and hotels with a full refund. Any thoughts? Cancel now and re-book at the last minute, assuming there's anything available? Have Sport Options or anyone else said they will be running day trips?

My first response wasn't particularly useful so I've had another go below.

I'm another one who had a lot booked and a lot of flights changed or cancelled since the original booking.

You may already be on this but what I've gone for is: BA Avios flights that can be cancelled 24 hours beforehand, flexible flights that cost more E.g. wizzair back from St.P and cheap flights with budget airlines from smaller airports that I can afford to ditch e.g. Ryanair from Billund. hth.

    Hotels more difficult.

Hi Matt. All good here as I hope you are too. Yes, missed that I'd posted in the wrong place, but we are moving out of here between the group stage and knock-outs, so if anyone comes calling when I'm in Rome or Copenhagen they will have an unpleasant surprise. Like you and Martin, all my flights are cancellable apart from a couple of cheap ones with Ryanair. I can also cancel all the accommodation - just a pity I'd put a lot of effort into booking places that I could cancel, or not, immediately we knew where we'd finish in the group. The smaller allocation complicates things a bit too as I'm likely to get tickets for games where Anoushka may be just below the new cut-off. She's also too young to be vaccinated by then, so she may be barred from some places. I'll sit tight for a while and see how things pan out. Hope to see you at one or other games.

Hi Martin. Similar here with flights. Is that the 20.55 from St P to Luton on 4th July? Hope to see you on it. Hotels may not be too hard to find if tourism is still depressed come July. I've just looked at prices for hotels in Rome and they look pretty cheap. Cheers, Paul

Hi Paul, yes that's the one I'm on. Currently I've not got any travel booked from Cop to St.P thinking that I'll wait until the group is underway, have you found anything useful? Martin

My gut would be to twist. We will know much more whether it is safe to travel to those areas nearer the time, and perhaps even arrange sport-opts style trips. You'll also know if you've got a ticket or not, something the new system has allowed us to do right up to the last minute.
It's not ideal, I'm not sure I see the point of potentially wasting money, if you can get a refund now.

We were planning to get the train from Malmo to Stockholm, flight booked from Stockholm to Tallinn, and the bus to St Petersburg. But Air Baltic cancelled the flight a couple of eeks ago, so we are in the same boat as you - literally, quite possibly.
