If we finish third in the group we can end up in the Budapest last 16 then Baku 1/4 route.

Yes, if we play the QF in Baku, we will need a visa to enter Azerbaijan. But the application process is online, quick and does not require you to submit your passport anywhere or go to their embassy. The visa fee is also modest. Information is here :

There is some more advice here.

I'm not sure why they are advising people to get their visa before 20th May. Considering the low probability that England will be in the Baku QF, I myself would not intend to apply at least until we have qualified for the Budapest R16 match.

Was in Baku for the Europa League Final with Arsenal in may, you apply for a visa online, easy form and takes a couple of days to be approved. However anyone that has visited Armenia recently may have issues of it being approved

Like David says seems strange that they recommend you apply by 20th may says there’s a fee to pay to don’t think many people will be doing them before may 20th and paying could be a waste of money . Would it cause issues if you didn’t travel ?

    In reply to David Lilley:

If we qualify for the knock out round by being one of the 4 best third place teams, these are the permutations.

    Bilbao - Munich
    ABDE
    ABDF

    Budapest - Baku
    ABCD
    ACDE
    ACDF
    BCDE
    BCDF

    Glasgow - Rome
    ADEF
    BDEF
    CDEF

With the play-off D winner being in Group C, along with Netherlands, Ukraine and Austria, I would expect Group C to provide one of the lucky 4. With Group F containing Germany, France, Portugal and play-off winner A, I would expect Group F also to provide one of the lucky 4.

The visa fee is only US$23 - update 13.12.19 it's now US$45 - which is trivial in the context of what we will be spending to follow England to the R16 and QF. If you don't travel, you miss the match and your QF ticket is wasted. There is no other consequence. It wouldn't invalidate your ticket to the semi-final or final, if we were to get through.

What I meant was it would be a waste of money if we didn’t take that route.. do you think it would be ok to wait till we end up playing in Budapest before applying for a visa even though they’ve recommended doing it before 20th may

Telling you to apply before 20th May only makes sense if each application is reviewed and approved by a human being, so that there is a limit on their daily capacity.

There may be further information issued in the future, closer to the tournament. My plan is to sit on my hands and hope that we don't go down this pathway. If we do, then there is an urgent i-visa service which would presumably jump the queue, although it does cost more - US$105.

I'd imagine the recommendation on doing it before 20th May is aimed at all the people who know they are definitely going to Baku (i.e. Wales, Switzerland and Turkey fans) plus neutrals. For the 2 teams who end up in the QF there they know it will have to be done last minute.

Getting a visa looks like the easy bit. If anyone has bright ideas about getting from Budapest to Baku, apart from driving through Turkey for 42 hours, please share them!

Pretty sure Azerbaijan has land locked its borders via Armenia and Georgia (Armenia for sure), so anyone fancy driving through Iran :-)

according to Baku airport flight arrivals, there are 5 arrivals from Istanbul today, so it looks like trying to go via Istanbul is the best bet.

    airport.az/.../arrivals

Also flights from Milan and Frankfurt, but you'd be going out of your way to get to those.
