Letter from Martin Glenn to all EURO 2016 England fans

Posted by Team England at 17:07 on Wednesday 29 June 2016

Dear Member,

Our defeat to Iceland and exit from Euro 2016 was obviously a bitter disappointment to us all.

The performance was nowhere near the standards required in the knockout stage of a major tournament and far below the level we aspire to for England. It was a huge let down to the many thousands of fans who followed the team so passionately and loyally - not just in France but through the qualifying campaign as well.

You will have all seen Roy Hodgson's decision to step down from his role along with the other members of his coaching staff. It is the right decision and we support it. Clearly we need to change to improve if we are going to achieve our ambitions in the years ahead.

As I say, what has stood out has been the magnificent support given to us from the stands. At every single match, England fans were incredible and never stopped singing.

In Marseille, you came through an incredibly difficult situation with great dignity. In Saint-Etienne, the Mayor of the town was amazed by the backing you gave. It was no different in Nice and then in Lens alongside the Welsh fans, you created a celebratory atmosphere befitting of a special fixture between Home Nations. Everywhere we have played, the reaction has been the same.

Our young squad will better for the experience and the passionate support you have given them will encourage them to want to do better in future tournaments.

Rest assured, from my side we will consider everything that has gone into this tournament and ensure we learn the lessons. Work is already underway with Dan Ashworth, myself and David Gill to ensure we manage the process of appointing a new England manager. These are not easy decisions but we will take the appropriate time to get it right.

I am confident that our investment in Coach Education and Sports Psychology in the National Football Centre at St. George’s Park which we started two years ago will bear fruit in the coming years and the success of our development teams gives me confidence that this will happen.

Of course, I appreciate nothing I can say about the future can make up for the hurt we are currently feeling, but I felt it important to say ‘thank you’ and stress we will never take you for granted.

Today I am sitting in my office having just arrived back from France, I should be in Paris looking forward to the game against France.

Since attending the world cup in Germany and subsequent tournaments including the debacle in Brazil what transpired in Nice was by far the most disgusting thing I have ever encountered watching England. The cowardice shown by these spoilt, petulant overpaid prima donnas made me feel physically sick when the final whistle finally ended my French experience. And there for me lies the problem, these players will never understand the utter feeling of despair the fans feel when things like this happen and keep happening.

It is with some irony that on the day I arrived back the celebrations to mark the centinary of the battle of the Somme are taking place. If only we could find a group of young Englishmen with the same patriotism that those who bravely gave their lives for this country then we might have a chance of having a team we can be proud of. I know there will be people who will say this analogy is a bit extreme and it is the technical and tactical aspects of the game we need to concentrate on to which I fully agree but Iceland won this game because they were a team, a team I respectfully point out who were made up of players from a much lower level than ours. But what they had was a plan that they carried out to perfection and more importantly they had the one thing we didn't PASSION.

As for Mr. Glenn's letter I fear it is just another cynical attempt to get us to part with our money again. I would respectfully point out to Mr. Glenn that I have spent 10's of thousands of pounds to be ultimately disappointed and like a large number of England fans will not be paying to rejoin. So if you wish to have my continued support I expect you to do the decent thing and renew ALL travel club members membership for FREE.

If you had listened to fans in the first place Roy would never have got the job, playing players low on confidence and in poor form. (Sterling) taking players injured for a whole season (wilshere)not starting vardy who had a great season,Kane our centre forward taking freekicks and corners dreadfully and still taking up too the last kick,I am disgusted by the fa as much as I am Roy and the players you only care bout money do us a favour and don't insult our intelligence you complete wasters

I think the Faceless people who employed Martin Glenn should 'take the long road and walk it' along with Hodgson. The "I'm no expert on football" comment was shocking by Glenn and this man is going to help pick the next England manager! And the trouble with the FA and Premier league is that there are far too many people involved within the game who's only interest is money!

The team was a shambles and also the organisation by the French authorities: no security,so disorganised entering stadiums through a single entrance,we had to lift women and children out of the way so they did not get hurt. No information staff around the towns helping fans to get about. The French could learn from the UK during other sporting events.

Players with passion would be a start-starting with them singing the National Anthem along with the fans

A free renewal would be also be a good idea -paid for by the  players for any fan who travelled to France!.

I have begrudgingly payed my £65 to renew, i believe this should be refunded at some point as a show of support to the fans who had to witness the debacle in France, least of all a manager who obviously had no clue in what he was doing from start to finish ! utter disgrace FA. Don't take us for granted and I will not be stepping foot inside Wembley anytime soon, however will be supporting the team on away trips as always, as in my view the true England fans will be doing.

I have waited a week or so to let my anger at the CE letter subside. Two days to write drivel ! Where is YOUR resignation, O Chief Executive? Or, were you completely irresponsible for that total shambles ? You must have limousined out at the final whistle and missed the hundreds of loyal England fans chanting ( You're not fit to wear the shirt". In your case you are not fit to wear the shirt and tie.

Thousands of pounds spent following England over the last 22 years and all you are interested in is that people renew. You should man up and give everybody free renewal of membership. At least ! There is nothing to encourage renewal for World Cups in Russia or Qater nor the next Euros where we do not even play in England unless we get to semi-final or final (at Wembley, where else?). Fat chance of getting there, then!  You, and the team, are a disgrace. I am wasting no more money on rejoining: to you, and this clueless, passionless team of obscene over-paid "stars". Good bye !!

The FA need to do the right things now to give the England teams of the future the best possible chances to succeed. That means a winter break in the domestic leagues, reducing the leagues below the top flight to 20, creating a style of play/identity for all age groups (not just a booklet titled 'EnglandDNA') make it work. Pick a long term manager to oversee all age groups, sell to English players that joining up and representing England from U16 to senior team is a journey and hopefully they will have a couple of winners medals and a few tournaments experience by the time they represent the seniors. Talk is cheap. This things should have been done 40 odd years ago when we never qualified for anything in the 70's. It is a disgrace that the FA have waited this long. We didn't have a national football centre until a few years ago. Apart from a few people in the FA's history, the FA has been a failure and has NOT done its job. Enough is enough now.

Hi Mr Glenn , lets hope you get this next appointment right as the FA don't seem to get it right .Firstly we need an English man , second you need look no further than Glenn Hoddle , forget the past do what's right for the team. Also Tony Adams , Alan Shearer, Stuart Peace , top ex internationals that have passed their badge get them involved around the England set up .We need to play without fear , the press create fear playing for England because we never seem to cope with failure . Tell the press to sod off tired of them picking the team putting pressure on the players and the manager , settled squad who know their jobs , not picking players who have two good games in the league then straight in the team, with all the respect in the world you stick to business end get top footballers in to do the football  regards clint

I have followed England for many years with my mates but we are not renewing this year as we have had enough of false promises and paying exorbitant prices to follow England. The next world cup is in Russia do I want to go there do I b******X. I will miss every minute of the experience but after getting gassed in Marseille and hit by police for doing nothing but having a drink and a singsong I have had it . I am 67 and not interested in getting the proverbial kicked out of me in Russia or any where else and I am fed up with our media always blaming us for trouble abroad when they really do know it was not us, just to sell there crap news stories. I see I still have 19 caps left for the next session of membership which is now due but I am afraid you know where to stick them .
