EURO 2020

UEFA EURO 2020

4 Right backs I know they can all play but

Do we really need 4

Surely an extra forward would of been more sensible.

    In reply to Andy Catanach:

Absolutely. Lingard has had a great season. Four right backs and an injured Maguire and Henderson ahead of him doesn't feel right. I know that we have a lot of attacking options but he tends to do it on the big occasions. My guess is that he either doesn't know his best formation or intends to different ways, 4 or 5 at the back depending on the opponents.

This is what I think, Martin: I would have taken either Ward-Prowse or Lingard, five mf players may not be enough, plus WP takes a wicked set piece. 10 defenders looks like Southgate will play a back 3 with probably Walker/James as the third cb - only two in cmf is a risk for me, especially as Mount just wants to attack but there are loads of options up front. Watkins not done enough to be in. Looks to be a strong squad but question marks with the defence and cmf for me.

Walker can play centre back so as Reece James. Trippier can actually play left back/left wing back he played there for England and also TAA can play wing back and midfield that’s probably why.

I’m still not happy that Southgate didn’t included Fikayo Tomori to be honest. He’s better than Mings and Coady. And yes I already seen Tomori played while on loan at Derby. Class act.

And Wan-Bissaka is probably better than all of them! I suspect James would have been cut but after his exceptional CL final Gareth felt he couldn't drop him.
Walkers flexibility is probably what kept him in the 26 as well although he is a weak link in a back 3.

    In reply to Clarke Buckeridge:

GS fully explained their flexibility so I'm a bit puzzled why some people are still puzzled.

The biggest mistake is picking Rashford, who's mind is so far away from football at the moment, he might as well be on the moon. As his performance in the EL final showed.

So, which player on the standby list gets in.

Lingard has had a good season. But we already have attacking flair in Foden, Mount and Grealish.
    Ramsdale - obviously we don't need a 4th goalkeeper.
Ward-Prowse is probably the best free kick taker around the opposition box. But would he be selected for any starting eleven given we have better all-round options.
White is a central defender who can also play defensive midfield. Our main central defender, Maguire, is crocked and Jordan Henderson has fitness concerns.
Godfrey is also a defender who could be cover for Maguire.
Watkins is useful but would be third choice striker behind Kane and Calvert-Lewin.

My vote goes to Ben White.

blogs: Ian Fenwick: England emerging for bright future

I’m someone who is lucky enough work within the FA and the one thing I can say from my experience is that the future of English football is amazingly bright. Of course it’s not enough to always say that the things are going to be good in...

blogs: Tim Vickery: Belo Horizonte a fair setting for England’s new beginnings

Last time the World Cup came to Brazil, England went to the city of Belo Horizonte to be humiliated; it is the scene of that notorious 1-0 defeat to the United States. Perhaps humiliation is too strong a word this time. After all, England’s 2014 World Cup campaign has been marked by single goal defeats to former world champions, whereas back in 1950 the pride of the old First Division went down to what essentially...

blogs: Graeme Le Saux: England can bounce back if they take a few risks

After the disappointment of the last two games, it’s vital that England take risks against Costa Rica. We don’t need two holding midfielders, Roy Hodgson has to start Adam Lallana over Danny Welbeck and we should switch to three men at the back. There was a clear opportunity against Uruguay and Italy to go to a back three – it would have allowed us to put some of our inventive players into more creative...

blogs: John Hemmingham: Let’s blow our own trumpet for once – come on England!

I’m used to blowing my own trumpet but not when it comes to predictions – I think we’ll get a result against Uruguay, but I thought we’d beat Italy 4-0! You’ve got to be optimistic as an England fan, sometimes it’s blind optimism but if you do what we do you have to believe. I’ve been following England with the band for 18 years now and it has always been the same. Roy Hodgson...

blogs: Tim Vickery: Uruguay may raise their game away from Fortaleza furnace

In the build-up to the World Cup a Uruguayan company launched an imaginative advertising campaign. Draped in a sky blue sheet, the colour of Uruguay’s shorts, the ghost of 1950 wandered around Rio frightening the locals – no one ever here needs reminding that the last time the World Cup was held in Brazil, Uruguay walked off with the trophy. So there was an element of Brazilian joy at Uruguay’s humiliating...
