EURO 2020

UEFA EURO 2020

Glastonbury cancelled could it affect the Euros?

I see Glastonbury has just been cancelled. Wouldn't  it look odd if large crowds  were allowed at football? Or not relevant to us?

Very different things. Glastonbury takes so much time to plan and build that they have to make an early decision on whether it can go ahead. Right now they just can’t commit, so will have no choice but to cancel (it would never proceed behind closed doors).

The Euros are definitely happening so a decision on the format and crowd size etc can be delayed as long as possible.

Agreed but its the behind closed doors thing that bothers me.
    Its not real football.

Glastonbury has been cancelled by the owners of the site, has no bearing on anything else with crowds. If the government had told them to cancel that would be different.

It is the sign of the times. When we started entering tier 3/4 in November it was for "a few weeks" and "until things "subside". Here we are a good 10 weeks later and I'm hearing April for here and March for Northern Ireland. That will be when we might be able to "see family again". Not exactly a ringing endorsement of a complete free up of everything. As every new news item happens a Euro 2021 with fans is starting to sound increasingly unlikely.

I agree....and I have very little interest in games without fans.

Without passion and atmosphere it really is just 22 men kicking a ball about.
I have read quite a few posts where people have said that good weather will reduce the virus. Well it's summer and very hot in S Africa and Brazil and both countries are suffering badly from Covid.
Seems to me there is a lot of wishful thinking going on.

there not excactly going to free everything up come april anyway theyv already said things will open up gradually and back down the tiers and if london stops in tier 4 then no games will be held there.can you imagine wembley with 30 per cent capacity and no away fans sounds grim to me football without fans is nothing

It’s grim, the recent Government briefing was solemn and resigned to a very long slog!
It would have been a massive feather in Johnson’s cap to get the tournament here, but things have taken a turn for the worse, consistent high levels of death,Kent variant is 30% more dangerous than they thought, and Brazilian/South African strains would be even more disastrous if they got here!
It’s unbelievable that borders still haven’t been shut, they should have shut them last March, and I said so way back then,Johnson has to discuss it next week and put it to Parliament,we really can’t afford more dithering if we’re to get out the other side of this,at this moment the realistic side of my brain is winning out over the hope side!

Anyone else seen this? I reckon the whole tournament will be either in the uk or Germany.

Why not simply move euros to the summer of 2022... The World cup is being held in December, so the summer is free....
By then, I think we can be confident of having a proper tournament with Fans present and all the usual things associated with such events.

That would never happen, the domestic seasons are due to start earlier for 2022/23 to accommodate the World Cup in the first place.

Stephen, your mention of Glastonbury immediately prompted an image in my mind of you on the Pyramid Stage belting out "Greasy Chip Butty" Obviously the headline act on the main stage would be Barry "Elvis" Pounder with his version of the Sunderland favourite "Wise Men Say" We can but dream!
