EURO 2020

UEFA EURO 2020

Diego Maradona

I am surprised there isn't a thread about this character, so I will start one. What does everyone think about him?

Honest opinions please and remember it is not done to be uncharitable to the dead, however tempting it may be, so here's mine:

A great player but a cheat. Bobby Robson - who was more of a gentleman than he could ever be - said that his second goal in 1986 was worth two goals, but then he did also say "It wasn't the hand of God. It was the hand of a rascal. God had nothing to do with it... That day, Maradona was diminished in my eyes forever."

I think I agree with that

Still don’t know how it’s the best goal of all time, he waltzed through without being challenged.

Still think it’s an own goal

There's some footage on Youtube from a different angle which shows it was his shot and not an own goal by Butcher. Also shows how Shilton was sold a dummy as Maradona shaped to use his left for far corner. I'm sick of seeing both "goals" from that game so won't be watching again.

Hi Andy, I was at the game. I was just a teenager and it was my first tournament. We didn't know about the handball until later that night when we were sitting outside a bar or a cafe and the evening paper had it all in photos. It was a bit like a military demonstration getting into the ground with soldiers with guns posted every couple of yards. I remember shouting for Barnes to get on the pitch when we were 2 down and he made a difference with 2 great crosses. I also remember walking away from the ground after with a StG flag over my shoulder with my brother and 2 mates and every Mexican cheering for Argentina and Maradona.

Best goal of all time? no chance.
    For the drama, commentary, attempted save and technical application two words;
    "Ronnie Radford".

blogs: Sue Smith: England’s forward focus can rattle Uruguay

Before every tournament most people are guilty of thinking a bit higher of England than they probably should - me included, I thought we would beat Italy 2-0! But despite the result I think we must take lots of positives from the performance. It was great to see the players actually go for it in the match and I thought we were quite entertaining. Raheem Sterling was great - every time he got the ball he looked dangerous...

blogs: Graeme Le Saux: Deny Luis Suarez space and England can prevail

How do you stop Luis Suarez? The key for England will be communication and getting tighter defensively than they did against Italy. There was an uncertainty and a vulnerability to England's defence, particularly down the left, on Saturday night...

blogs: John Hemmingham: Even Balotelli’s fiancée knows this band on the run

There is no better place to be as the leader of England’s band than at a World Cup in Brazil – but the one downside is we don’t know if we’ll be allowed to play inside the stadiums! This country has two loves, music and football...

blogs: Tim Vickery: Brazil-Spain jostles for position as football's new super-rivalry

Now might be a good time to remind everyone that Spain lost their first match in the last World Cup – and look what happened to them! And so, to take our minds off the result in Manaus, I decided to have a look at one of world football’s most...

blogs: Adrian Bevington: The connection between England’s players and fans at a World Cup cannot be overestimated

Even now I can recall it perfectly. Lucio stumbled and miscontrolled when heading towards his own goal, and Michael Owen seized the moment. I knew at that point, in Shizuoka in 2002, that Michael would score. And I have to confess that at that moment I really did think we are going to win the World Cup. It is an emotion that takes over you, and although it didn’t turn out to be correct, one of the great pleasures...
