The new head of Uefa wasnt keen on Platinis barmpot idea of multi countries hosting the finals, so should any host countries drop out, i can see them giving more games to any of the British stadiums, maybe even including Wales.
Be good to get clarification asap. But I guess Uefa bigwigs will make sure they book their hotels first !

We don't know for certain : it's all to be confirmed. But the start date and end date of the tournament have been moved from 12th June 2020 / 12th July 2020 to 11th June 2021 / 11th July 2021. So the most likely date for the Croatia match is Sunday 13th June.

The Danish FA has been granted an extension until 8th May to declare whether Copenhagen will still host Euro 2020 matches. The city of Copenhagen and the Danish FA are in discussions with a view to finding a solution which will enable Copenhagen to stay on the roster and they say "Negotiations are progressing positively."

    In reply to Andrew Hookway:

As of 6th May, the following cities have sent letters of intention to UEFA confirming that they will host matches in 2021 : Baku, Bucharest, Copenhagen, Dublin, London, Munich, St Petersburg.

Bucharest has indicated it would be keen to stage additional matches if any city pulls out. I think Russia would also be happy to take extra matches.

Regarding Glasgow, the Scottish government, Glasgow city council, the local organising body and the Scottish FA have all said that they are committed to hosting matches.

The Spanish FA have said that they see no problem with hosting matches in Bilbao. The Spanish government has extended tax breaks and visa concessions to UEFA to include 2021. These developments strongly suggest that Bilbao will be still on the roster.

The Dutch health minister has said that no sporting events may be staged in the Netherlands before spectators until a vaccine for covid-19 is available. If the Dutch government sticks by this policy then it is difficult to see how Amsterdam can remain a host city, as UEFA will want guarantees now that the matches can go ahead before fans.

I haven't been able to find out anything about Budapest or Rome.

Nice update thanks David. Is there any timescale for when Uefa will announce the actual schedule for the matches / kick offs for next Summer ? I hope the Croatia game is still the 2pm Sunday game.

    In reply to Peter salnicki:

I haven't found any useful information about the new fixture schedule on the UEFA website. My gut feeling, and it is only an opinion, is that all 12 of the original host cities will declare themselves willing and able to stage matches, even Amsterdam and Rome. If this opinion is borne out, then surely all fixtures will be moved by exactly 52 weeks to occur in the same sequence and on the same days of the week.

I think that, when the Dutch health minister made his statement about matches being behind closed doors until a vaccine was available, he was thinking of the Eredivisie season. I doubt whether he was thinking as far ahead as summer 2021 when the Euros are due to take place.

In Italy, the worst of the coronavirus outbreak was in the north of the country. The latest information is that the Lazio region, which includes Rome, has "only" had 7212 confirmed cases and 566 deaths. This is actually quite a low incidence in relation to the regional population size, a lot lower than London. By the time of the tournament, Rome ought to be as safe as any other venue.

I suspect that the delay in UEFA making an announcement is down to them sorting out and signing all of the new contracts needed for the postponed tournament. There may also be local contractual issues around the cancellation of other events which were due to take place in the stadiums in summer 2021.

    In reply to David Lilley:

The latest situation is that UEFA have had firm commitments from 9 host cities but they are still "having issues" with 3 host cities. The UEFA President has acknowledged that they are prepared to go ahead with the tournament with 12, 11, 10 or even just 9 cities. He did not reveal which were the 3 cities with "issues". I would guess it will be 3 out of Amsterdam, Bilbao, Budapest and Rome. This all suggests that an announcement about the revised fixture list is not imminent.

Note that England cannot play in Amsterdam under any scenario. We can only play in Bilbao or Budapest if we are one of the lucky 3rd place teams to qualify for the round of 16. However, if we were to win Group D and then the round of 16 (in Dublin) then our quarter final would have been scheduled for Rome.

blogs: Tim Vickery: A World Cup in every sense

Two World Cup Finals are being replayed in this week’s 2014 semi finals. The Germans seek revenge for their 2-0 defeat in 2002 when they meet Brazil – amazingly only the second time these giants have ever met in the tournament. And Holland were the closest – so far – a European team has ever come to winning the World Cup in South America when they hit the post with almost the last kick of normal...

blogs: Sue Smith: England can bounce back

There’s no doubt England can bounce back – the women’s team did it after the 2007 World Cup by going all the way in Euro 2009. Although we lost against Germany in the final of those Euros, there was a sense of achievement and progress...

blogs: Graeme Le Saux: Cool-hand Luke can handle price-tag

Having a hefty price tag can weight heavy on your shoulders – it certainly did for me when I moved back to Chelsea in 1997 for £5.5m. At the time I was the most expensive English defender and there was a lot of pressure that came with that. I found it quite hard and Luke Shaw now finds himself in a similar position after moving to Manchester United for £30m. It does make you look at things differently...

blogs: Graeme Le Saux: It’s time to give England’s players a break

There’s no doubt England’s players will be disappointed with the way things panned out in Brazil, but they deserve a break after the mentally exhausting season they have all had. They’ll feel like they are coming home prematurely because going into these tournaments you always think that you’re good enough to progress, so to lose their first two games and be out of the World Cup this early will...

blogs: John Hemmingham: Fresh faces give us cause for hope

In my years following England I’ve seen some great players come and go – and teams rise and fall. I can say with pride that I saw every game David Beckham played for England and I have also been privileged enough to have seen all of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard’s appearances. Watching the Costa Rica match it was hard to think that it might be both of their final appearances. I remember Gerrard...
