EURO 2020

UEFA EURO 2020

Euro 2020 Plans for group games (London)

Whats everyones plans for the Wembely group games?

I've heard rumours of a large fan zone at Greenwich and a smaller one at Potters Fields both free without ticket,

I myself wasn't alive for 96 so I have no idea on the best areas in London for mass pre-game drinks and atmosphere ... Trafalgar Square has always seen to have been a favourite for club teams at Wemebly for finals ect.

You've got a Sunday afternoon match vs Croatia which should be good one, also i don't wanna jump the gun... but a possible game against Scotland on a Friday evening would be the ultimate dream.

This is where you can find information about the Fan Zones.

    www.london.gov.uk/.../fan-zones

Potters Fields is quite a small area and it is possible that, at certain times, access may be controlled to keep the number of visitors within limits for safety reasons.

The Greenwich Park fan zone is still going through the planning application process and is not yet confirmed. If it goes ahead, this will be the 'real' fan zone with the number of visitors projected to be up to 30,000 at the busiest times. Although entry will be free, on days when matches are being shown on the giant screens (e.g. England match days) a ticketing system will be in operation to limit the numbers. Whilst the tickets will be free, there will need to be pre-registration of applicants and, if necessary, a ballot.

Greenwich Park will be ideal for fans who do not have a match ticket. However, for those who have a ticket to a Wembley match, Greenwich Park will not be the place for pre-game drinks. It is just too far from Wembley Stadium.

It would probably take just over an hour without any delays to get from the fan park in Greenwich to Wembley Park Station so it would be do-able if you wanted to watch an afternoon game at the fanfest for example then head to Wembley for the next match. DLR from Cutty Sark to Canary Wharf, Jubilee line to Baker Street then hop on the Met line to Wembley.

Why wouldn't Greenwich Park be no good for fans with a Wembley ticket? Two of our games are at 8pm so you could easily view the 2pm games on that day which would finish at 3.50 pm. Easily get to Wembley Park tube station in under an hour by a variety of routes...say walk to Maze Hill station take the 10 min train to London Bridge and then straight up the Jubilee Line...even quicker if you changed to Metropolitan at Baker Street

I was considering the original question of where would be "the best areas in London for mass pre-game drinks".

As has been said, it's just over an hour from Cutty Sark DLR to Wembley Park tube station. Add 10 minutes walking from the Greenwich Park beer tent to the DLR station. Add 12 minutes to get from Wembley Park station to the stadium turnstile. Add 15 minutes, say, queuing to get in and find your place. And you want to be there, say, 15 minutes before kick off ? So, for an 8 pm kick off, you're downing your last pint just after 6 pm.

It's an interpretation of what you mean by "pre-game drinks".

This is from the website which I linked to in my first post :-

In the proposed plans for the Greenwich Fan Zone, what matches would be screened?

Should the fan zone take place there would be selected UEFA EURO 2020 matches shown on big screens in the fan zone, and a ticket would be needed for entry on these days. Tickets would be free and allocated via a ballot process.

Our proposed plan for the fan zone is to screen the following matches:
England games in the Group Stages (between Friday 12 and Wednesday 24 June)
All knock out games involving UK home nations (between 27 June and 30 June)
Both semi-finals (3 and 4 July) which will be hosted at Wembley Stadium
The final (12 July) which will be hosted at Wembley Stadium

Given the nature of the draw and knock out stages we are unable to provide the full proposed schedule at this stage. To be clear, we would not screen all EURO 2020 matches at the fan zone.

    Also from that website :

Would I need a ticket for the fan zone?

The proposed fan zone screenings would be ticketed by a ballot system. Tickets would need to be booked in advance as it would not be possible to get tickets to the fan zone in Greenwich Park on the day.

Only those with tickets would be allowed in. Four tickets would be available per person and anyone would be welcome whatever team they support.

The ticket ballot would open in 2020 (dates dependent on further consultation and approval of the fan zone plans). Around 30,000 tickets would be made available for London families, local people and fans from across Europe to come to the fan zone for the proposed matches.

From this, it is not clear whether you would need a ticket to enter the fan zone at any time on a day when there is a match screening or only close to the time of the screening itself. My guess is that, as they can't go round the fan zone ejecting anyone who does not have a ticket to the screening, you would need to have a ticket to enter at any time on that day.

So, you won't be seeing the 2 pm match in the fan zone on an England match day, as it is not being shown. You'll have to find a pub showing the match. And you won't be having a pre-game drink in the fan zone unless you have a ticket to the screening. You'll have to find a pub.

I will hopefully be going to Wemebly for the group games, just have to find out about the results of the ballot. Just wondering the best way to make a weekend in London for the first two games.

    Might as well not bother

Our 3rd game v Czech Republic, there's only games from our group on that day, both kicking off at 8pm. No 2pm or 5pm games

A bit like the official 'fan zone' at Boxpark Wembley. Masses of huge screens, but just showing FA adverts rather than other games, or even Sky Sports News.

Does anyone have any idea if it would be worth drinking around Wembley or better off central London and making way to the ground?

Depends what you are looking for. Atmosphere in very busy pubs or a quieter pub where it's easier to get served. No right or wrong answer.

Game 1 - Sunday afternoon so no hassle

Game 2 - probably straight from work

Game 3 - fly back from Bucharest that morning so hopefully no delays!

blogs: Tim Vickery: Belo Horizonte a fair setting for England’s new beginnings

Last time the World Cup came to Brazil, England went to the city of Belo Horizonte to be humiliated; it is the scene of that notorious 1-0 defeat to the United States. Perhaps humiliation is too strong a word this time. After all, England’s 2014 World Cup campaign has been marked by single goal defeats to former world champions, whereas back in 1950 the pride of the old First Division went down to what essentially...

blogs: Graeme Le Saux: England can bounce back if they take a few risks

After the disappointment of the last two games, it’s vital that England take risks against Costa Rica. We don’t need two holding midfielders, Roy Hodgson has to start Adam Lallana over Danny Welbeck and we should switch to three men at the back. There was a clear opportunity against Uruguay and Italy to go to a back three – it would have allowed us to put some of our inventive players into more creative...

blogs: Tim Vickery: Uruguay may raise their game away from Fortaleza furnace

In the build-up to the World Cup a Uruguayan company launched an imaginative advertising campaign. Draped in a sky blue sheet, the colour of Uruguay’s shorts, the ghost of 1950 wandered around Rio frightening the locals – no one ever here needs reminding that the last time the World Cup was held in Brazil, Uruguay walked off with the trophy. So there was an element of Brazilian joy at Uruguay’s humiliating...
