Allocations v categories

From the EUFA site we get 50% of the numbers below, so minimum 6,000 for last 16 & Qtr. Final, sorry to be a bit thick, wheat is the minimum caps to get cat 3 ticket?

I am on 26 caps, and have applied for lowest category with option ticked to accept 1 level higher

Group stage: Copenhagen (14,000 tickets for supporters of participating teams)

Group stage: Amsterdam, Baku, Bilbao, Bucharest, Budapest, Dublin, Glasgow and Saint Petersburg (20,000 tickets)

Group stage: Munich, Rome (24,000)

Group stage: London (28,000)

Round of 16: Amsterdam, Bilbao, Bucharest, Budapest, Copenhagen, Dublin, Glasgow and London (12,000)

Quarter-finals: Baku, Munich, Rome and Saint Petersburg (12,000)

Semi-finals: London (24,000)

Final: London (26,000)

If I were running the ballots, this is what I would do. If the 48 capper and the 12 capper were both successful in the allocation / ballot then I would make sure that they both got tickets in the same category.

I would decline to answer any questions, whether general or specific, about how it is decided which category to give them.

Can I change my mind ?

Going down the caps table, when you get to the 48 capper, give him his first choice if available. Say, category 3.

Going further down the caps table you reach the 12 capper. His first choice was also necessarily category 3, as all applicants have to apply for the same category for any given match. If category 3 is no longer available but he agreed to be moved up, then give him category 2.

Then re-visit the 48 capper and move him up to category 2 as well, since members on the same application have to get the same category for any given match.

If the 12 capper cannot be allocated a ticket because he did not agree to be moved up a category or because his first and second choice categories are both sold out then he doesn't get a ticket. The 48 capper remains in category 3.

I'd tend to agree with this pragmatic solution but would add that the 12 capper (and hence all the group) probably needs to plump for a middle cat for the first two group games to stand any chance at all.

That way there are all three cats to choose from.

David's theory might still hold tight though (but for three cats).

I agree with you. Most of the demand will be for Wembley tickets as a lot of fans will be uneasy with applying for tickets to games which could take place at numerous places throughout Europe, with the additional cost and hassle of arranging flights and accommodation at short notice.
I think this is where Eufa have made a mistake with having the tournament as can not see a lot of teams selling their allocations to the last 16 and Q/f as fans don’t have unlimited money. Fans from a relative small country like Portugal already have the expense of going to Munich and Budapest, then could be playing in Dublin etc

Thanks David and Matthew for taking the time to reply. At the end of the day I guess the conclusion is that a lot of the detailed rules / logic that are used in these cases is unknown but at least now I'm confident that I'm not missing anything that's known outside of the ESTC (I go on the basis that if you two don't know for sure, no one does!). Thanks again.

As you say all applicants have to apply for the same category for any given match.

But do we know for sure that "members on the same application have to get the same category"?

It does make sense. But equally, given it's about considering each individual separately, then it doesn't strike me as unreasonable in the example to give one a category 3 ticket and the other a category 2 ticket.

    In reply to Ian Costain:

What you suggest would be equitable. But the whole point of applying on the same application is so that you can sit together. If members on the same application were awarded tickets in different categories then, when UEFA come to assign seat numbers, their computer would say "Cannot Compute" and smoke would start pouring out of it.
