2018 FIFA World Cup Russia
I'm planning on staying out there for as long as England stay in the tournament (so yeah fair chance this thread will be redundant when we lose to Panama) but looking at the various threads it doesn't seem like many others are doing the same? Obviously I get why, expense, time off work etc.
My first tournament was France, so can anyone with experience from tournaments where you can't just nip over for the day answer a couple of questions I have please. Firstly how much of a pain is it trying to sort out accommodation in the next city you find yourself travelling to - is it similar to what we're seeing now with hotel prices rocketing/showing as unavailable? Same question for getting a flight home after we're knocked out? And there's a chance I might be staying out there on my own as my mates probably won't be, so is this pretty commonplace, i.e. the vast majority of fans go home after the group stage, leaving the billy no mates like me to try and make friends with each other? Basically is anyone who's done this before/planning on doing it now able to offer any thoughts/tips? Cheers!
I do this every tournament.
Q1) Firstly how much of a pain is it trying to sort out accommodation in the next city you find yourself travelling to - is it similar to what we're seeing now with hotel prices rocketing/showing as unavailable?
A1) It's never been a great problem I've found. Remember that there is a reduced number of England fans travelling due to that fact that many go home after the first round. Generally the hotels aren't at rip-off prices either.
Q2) Same question for getting a flight home after we're knocked out?
A2) This one's a bit more tricky, because those left also want to get home (as do media). Initially prices are daft (from Brazil it was >£1000 one way), but after a day or so the prices go down, but you'll still be looking at non-direct flights.
